• The Son… who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person… (Heb. 1:3)

The unspoken analogy is the relationship between the sun and the rays of light (that stream forth from it). As the the rays of light shine on earth, Jesus shines the Father’s glory into our hearts.

Now, rays of light express the nature of the sun. But those rays are not the sun itself (rays of light come from the sun) and as long as the sun exists, the radiance of its rays will shine…

Jesus is the brightness (the radiance) of the Father’s glory, the express image of the Most High God.

The Greek word for brightness is apaugosmo: it speaks of God’s glory “pouring forth” or “streaming forth” from Jesus.

To grasp this excellency of Jesus you must first know that He is of the same nature, substance and essence as the Father…

Jesus is God—He is like the Father—but He is a distinct person from the Father, and as a distinct person, He is the brightness (the pouring and streaming forth) of the Father.

  • It is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Cor. 4:6)

The apostle Paul explained how the streaming from God’s brightness (in the face of Jesus) enters your heart and imparts the knowledge of the Glory of God.

Beholding the Image of the Invisible God

  • He is the image of the invisible God… (Col. 1:15) Jesus said to him, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father…” (Jn. 14:9) For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily… (Col. 2:9)

Jesus is the exact representation of the Father (His nature, substance and essence). The word image in greek (Gk. eikon) means an exact representation.

That’s why Jesus said:

  • He who has seen Me has seen the Father—John 14:9

The glory of the Father is only visible through Jesus…

JESUS is the image of the invisible God.

Put differently: the fullness of the Father is contained and expressed through Jesus in a human body—the beauty of the Father’s love, wisdom, purity and humility is shown through the humanity of His Son.

Would you like to see the radiance of God?

Want to behold His image?

Then, turn your eyes upon Jesus…

… and keep turning your eyes upon Him (every day and every hour) until the radiance of His majesty shines within… and the knowledge of God transforms your soul.
